The STEP student becomes an integral member of his or her host family and often maintains close ties with them long after graduation. Host parents accept responsibility for the student, including supervision of class work and activities at the high school and in the community. They work closely with the STEP student's guidance counselor in advising him or her throughout the college preparation, application and selection process. They also provide moral support, reassurance and advice in solving problems. Host parents encourage the student to maintain and share the values of his or her family and culture. The continuing availability and involvement of current and past host families is key to the STEP program.
